Taking Charge: Peer Support Network

Details

Date:
February 6, 2021
Time:
11:00 am - 1:00 pm

This is a FREE online event for people living with HIV 50 years and up.

As part of our HIV & Ageing Project, our Peer Support Network is a monthly and informal group gathering. It is conducted in a safe, social and partly educational format. Utilising an empowerment model, it builds resilience and health literacy for participants to engage with health and aged care providers. It also improves self-advocacy, develops skills to disclose HIV status, deals with stigma and discrimination, and builds peer networks. These group meetings are peer led, ensuring that they meet the group’s needs. Topics include improving treatments understanding, managing medication for multiple health conditions, legal matters, Advanced Care planning, nutrition, exercise, cognitive health and computer literacy.

Our first meet up for the year will be an informal one, with the aim of checking in and sharing with one another the wonderful strategies we’ve used that helped us through 2020. To continue the light mood of the evening, we will also be playing a couple of fun online games during our catch-up.

The HIV & Ageing Project also trains volunteer peer facilitators to enhance peer-led capacity as well as the sustainability of support networks. If you want to become a facilitator or be placed on our notification list so you can be kept up to date about the next gathering contact Vic Perri on 9863 8733 or  vperri@livingpositivevictoria.org.au

Living Positive Victoria acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land where we work and live. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We celebrate the stories, culture and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders of all communities who also work and live on this land.
